The Sunbeam Children's Foundation is an independent charitable organisation, registered in Hong Kong and China, founded in Hong Kong in 1996 and operational since 1999. The Foundation raises funds in Hong Kong to support the daily care and education of up to 100 disadvantaged children who reside at the SunbeamChildren'sVillageinBaiwan, Guangdong Province, China.All operatingcosts for the Villageare met throughdonations via the Hong Kong based Foundation and grants secured by the Foundation. The Sunbeam Children's Village operates as a joint venture between Sunbeam Children's Foundation in Hong Kong and the Qingxin County Civil Affairs Bureau, Guangdong Province. Together, we ensure the children under our care are equipped with the necessary professional and social skills required to lead independent and successful lives in today's world.

Position

The Board Chair is responsible for the leadership and the effective functioning of the Sunbeam Children's FoundationBoard. The Board Chair will support and sustain the work of the Foundation and provide governance leadership and strategic fundraising support.

Specific responsibilities include: 

Leadership and supervision

      Lead the Board to carry out its governance duties, including chairing of board meetings;

      Ensure the Board has approved policies to help ensure sound and compliant governance and management of the organisation;

      Ensure the Board's directives, policies, and resolutions are carried out;

      Set priorities and create agendas for meetingswith the Board; 

      Moderate board meetings to ensure that they are constructive, efficient and respectful;

      Work closely with the Resident Director to ensure the effective management of the Sunbeam Village in accordance with the SCF mission.

Brand Ambassador

      Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major individual donors, foundation grants and individual gifts;

      Serve as an ambassador of the organisation and advocate its mission to internal and external stakeholders.

 

Financial Viability

      Play a leading role in fundraising activities, including working alongside Board to generate ideas for events to generate income;

      In collaboration with the Board, generate substantial annual revenue and foster the charities overall financial health.

 

Talent Management and Culture

      Assure ongoing recruitment, development, and contributions of Board members, including a commitment to diversity to ensure optimal decision making;

      Review the performance of board members;

      Promote the development of a positive board culture;

      Help to devise and implement a Board succession plan.

 

Selection Criteria

      Experience, either as an executive or Board Director in the not-for-profit, charity or philanthropic sectors, ideally with experience in child welfare services;

      Board-level experience, with sound, working knowledge of corporate governance, particularly within the charity regulatory framework;

      Strategic mindset with expertise in business strategy, fundraising and advocacy;

      A strong network of connections, with skills in relationship building and strategic partnerships;

      Cross-cultural skills, and/or exposure to China-based operations; 

      Skills in either Digital Strategy, Data Security, People and Culture, or Grant Writing will be highly regarded;

      Outstanding leadership and communication skills;

      Ability to lead the Board in setting strategic direction, formulating key strategies and reviewing operational performance;

      Board of Directors qualifications will be highly regarded.

 

Service on the Sunbeam Children's Foundation Board of Directors is without remuneration.

 

Supplemental information:

Time Requirements:

On average, 4 hours per week.

 

The Board meets once a month with meetings lasting 1 hour. Occasional conference calls as needed.

May occasionally serve on other ad hoc groups or planning meetings as needed.
