EmpowerU, a HK-registered section 88 charity, is seeking passionate and dynamic individuals to join our Board of Directors or Advisory Board and contribute to our mission of providing high-quality education to those on the margins, so they can use their voice to create a better future.

Whom do we serve? : EmpowerU serves two marginalized groups: migrant domestic workers (MDW) and ethnically diverse (ED) youth.

Migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Hong Kong play a vital role, constituting around 10% of the workforce and assisting ~15% of households. Their contributions to the economy amount to ~3.6% of the GDP, enabling 110,000 mothers in Hong Kong to join the workforce while supporting their families and their home country economies through remittances. Despite these contributions, MDWs face educational challenges, EmpowerU addresses this issue with an award-winning curriculum focusing on Business, Law, Health, Technology, and Leadership to nurture leaders who can create lasting social change and take control of their financial futures.

ED youth in Hong Kong encounter various challenges, including high poverty and dropout rates, as well as low social expectations and lack of role models. These obstacles often hinder their educational progress, limit their aspirations, and impede their ability to access appropriate guidance and opportunities for personal development and career exploration. The absence of relatable role models from similar backgrounds and the lack of community-led initiatives further exacerbate the difficulties faced by these youth in reaching their full potential.

What do we do? Our unique impact-based and community-led education and empowerment programmes combine technology, community, and award-winning educators to empower MDWs and ED youth to take control of their futures and thrive both economically and socially.

About the Role : As a Board Director at EmpowerU, you will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of the organization and contributing your expertise to enhance our impact. Leveraging your skills and experience in your respective area of expertise, you will be responsible for:

● Providing strategic guidance and oversight on organizational governance

● Participating in fundraising initiatives and donor engagement efforts

● Offering insights on financial oversight and budget management

● Contributing to public relations and advocacy efforts in the community

● Evaluating organizational performance and long-range planning

Expected Commitment: We ask for an average monthly commitment of at least 5 hours, attendance at board meetings and participation in organizational activities. Board members are expected to contribute financially to the organization and actively engage in fundraising activities. Specific commitments will vary based on individual skills and availability.

Ideal Profiles: We are seeking individuals with the following skills and backgrounds to join our Board of Directors or Advisory Board:

● Fundraising

○ Experience in identifying and securing programme and operational funding

○ Ability to lead fundraising campaigns and engage potential donors

● Marketing & Communications

○ Proficiency in developing marketing strategies and communications materials

○ Skills in managing public relations efforts and digital communications platforms

● Financial Expertise

○ Proficiency in financial oversight and budget management

○ Ability to analyze financial reports and ensure accountability

● Academic or Educational Expertise

○ Track record of academic research in relevant fields and strong publication record

○ Track record of community engagement and knowledge transfer

○ Understanding of the HK education system

● Legal Expertise

○ Knowledge of legal matters relevant to organizational operations

○ Experience in ensuring compliance and reviewing legal documents
